How to Find a Quality Jeweller

Q Report Team
Updated on October 06, 2022
4 min read

You wouldn’t let just anyone cut your hair, and chances are that you take your car to the same trustworthy mechanic every time it needs attention. Why? The answer’s simple; you want someone you can trust to provide a level of quality you can depend on.

The same is true for jewellers. A quality jeweller will make shopping for those precious items an absolute pleasure, and you’ll always have someone to turn to when your piece needs care. So how do you go about finding your go-to jeweller, and what can you do to encourage this relationship?

The Role of a Jeweller

Good jewellers don’t just sell jewellery. They also play some other important roles, such as the following:

  • Many people find that they need advice when making jewellery purchases. You should feel that you can ask your jeweller about ring setting styles, stone quality, heirloom pieces, and much more.
  • Repair Technician. Unfortunately, jewellery can sometimes be damaged, and a good jeweller will be able to provide an expert repair service. Ideally, you’ll be able to have your repairs done by the jeweller who originally sold you the piece; they’ll know it well and likely have the correct tools and materials on hand. A good jeweller should also be able to resize jewellery when necessary.
  • A good jeweller is knowledgeable enough to teach you all about ring metals and precious stones, and you may be in need of this kind of teacher when you want to make an important purchase like an engagement ring.

In other words, a good jeweller isn’t just a salesperson. They should be able to provide for all of your jewellery needs, from education, purchase and repair to jewellery insurance and replacement.

Why Jewellers Beat Online Shopping Every Time

Shopping for jewellery online can be tempting. After all, you can browse millions of items with just a few clicks without leaving your couch. But while you may have access to all of these online choices, a jeweller you can meet and chat to will beat online shopping every time.

Why? It’s virtually impossible to make an informed judgment about a piece of jewellery from seeing pictures of it on a screen. You can’t hold it, turn it toward the light or compare the lustre of its stones to other pieces in similar settings. You can’t have a face-to-face conversation about it with an informed jeweller or try it on and see how it looks on your very own finger. Yes, you may be able to look at a diamond’s GIA report online, but nothing compares to being able to pick it up, hold it under the light, examine it carefully and compare it to other diamonds.

When you shop at your trusted jeweller, you have an opportunity to build a relationship with a business you can return to if your jewellery needs repairs or resizing. You can also get it insured before you leave the shop so that it’s protected if something happens to it. For these reasons, it’s always better to buy from a brick and mortar jeweller than it is to buy jewellery online.

Where to Look and What to Look for in a Jeweller

When you need a hairdresser or mechanic, you probably ask your family and friends for recommendations. This strategy works for finding a jeweller as well. A jeweller’s reputation is important, and you’ll want to one established enough that you can return to them ten years down the line when you’re in need of an anniversary gift.

We also recommend looking for a Q Certified jeweller - they are some of the best and brightest jewellers in Australia.

As you look for a jeweller in your area, consider asking the following questions:

  • Does the jeweller teach you how to look for diamonds? Even if you’re not trained in the 4 C’s, a good jeweller will help you to understand enough about gems to make an informed purchase.
  • How does the jeweller handle certification and appraisal? Don’t trust a jeweller who tells you to take their word for a diamond’s quality. Not only should a jeweller show you a diamond’s certification, but they should also answer any questions you have about reading the certificate.
  • Does the jeweller listen to you? A good jeweller knows that customers are each unique in their desires and needs, and it’s impossible to help customers find the perfect piece without good listening skills. If a jeweller seems to be pushing certain things on you without first finding out what you’re looking for, you might want to keep looking.
  • Is the jeweller established? You’ll want to return to your jeweller for years in the future for anniversary gifts, ring resizing, cleanings and repairs. If a jeweller is a fly-by-night operation, you may not have the opportunity to do this.
  • Does the jeweller have a large selection? In the long term, you’ll be happiest if your family jeweller has a wide selection of styles, pieces and designs.
  • Does the jeweller offer a selection of services? An in-house gemologist can help you find just the right stone for your tastes and budget. A bench repair person can handle repairs and resizing. A designer may be able to create custom pieces for you. Not all jewellers offer all of these services, so ask about which ones you can expect.
  • What are the jeweller’s policies regarding returns and warranties? Make sure a jeweller’s policies are acceptable to you before you make a purchase.
  • Does the jeweller offer insurance? Q Certified jewellers are educated to explain the benefits of jewellery insurance at the time of purchase. This means your jewellery can be covered from the moment you walk it out of the store.

Finding a jeweller you can trust and count on makes all the difference when you’re in the market for a piece of jewellery that will be treasured for years to come. With a trusted jeweller in your corner, you’ll make a wise decision from the start and have someone to return to if the piece is ever damaged or lost.
