Engagement Ring Shopping Etiquette

Q Report Team
Updated on November 11, 2022
3 min read

You’re an expert at shopping for lots of things: shoes, food, phones, maybe even cars. But most people wouldn’t consider themselves to be expert shoppers when it comes to engagement rings.

Never fear. With a few engagement ring shopping etiquette tips in your back pocket, you’ll be able to successfully navigate the buying process, work with a trusted jeweller and find the perfect ring for your fiance-to-be.

Do Some Research Ahead of Time

You wouldn’t show up at a car dealership without an idea of what kind of vehicle you’re looking for. The same holds true for engagement ring shopping. You’ll have a far better experience if you do your research ahead of time and arrive at the jewellers with a general idea of what you’re looking for.

First of all, you’ll need to find out what kind of ring style your fiance-to-be prefers. Without a firm grasp on their tastes, you can easily feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of options out there.

If you’re not sure what to look for, do a little investigating. Look at the other jewellery worn by your fiance-to-be and consider asking friends and family for ideas. If it’s not important that you keep the ring a secret, go together to look at rings, and take notes on which ones catch their eye.

Work Out Your Budget Before You Shop

One of the worst engagement ring shopping mistakes is failing to establish a budget before starting their shopping. This ensures you can avoid a scenario where someone falls in love with a ring that is way out of their price range.

With a budget for your ring purchase, you can tell your jeweller how much you want to spend, and the jeweller can point you to good options within your budget. You’ll be glad later that you decided on your budget before you started shopping.

Be Literate in the Four C’s

The four C's of diamond shopping are cut, colour, clarity and carat. When you understand these characteristics ahead of time, it’s far easier to talk with the jeweller about specific rings. What do these terms mean?

  • Cut: A diamond’s sparkle is largely determined by its cut, so this attribute is extremely important. Diamond cuts are graded from excellent to poor.
  • Colour: The highest quality diamonds are colourless, while lower quality diamonds have a yellowish quality to them. The GIA grades colour on a scale from D (colourless) to Z (yellow or light brown).
  • Clarity: A diamond’s clarity is determined by the number and size of blemishes and imperfections within the stone. The GIA has a clarity scale to help describe various kinds of internal and external imperfections, known as inclusions and exclusions.
  • Carat: This term refers to the diamond’s actual weight, not its size. If you want to maximise your budget, look for a diamond that is just shy of whole or half-carat marks. A 1.9-carat diamond may cost significantly less than a 2.0-carat diamond, but the size difference will not be obvious to the eye.

It’s Okay to Ask for Diamond Certification

Don’t hesitate to ask to look at a diamond’s certification while you’re shopping for an engagement ring - in fact, it’s encouraged. Any reputable jeweller will be happy to show you a diamond’s certificate and discuss the four C’s mentioned above. You won’t be considered rude or demanding to see this information. In fact, jewellers like to work with knowledgeable customers.

Buy Engagement Ring Insurance at the Time of Purchase

When you buy an engagement ring from a Q Certified Jeweller, you can purchase jewellery insurance right there at your jeweller’s shop. This is a smart move for several reasons. First, you’ll have insurance for the engagement ring from the moment you take it out the door, giving you peace of mind that if anything happens to it, you’re covered.

Second, you establish a long-term relationship with your jeweller. With Q Report jewellery insurance, you can choose to return to your original jeweller for repairs and replacement if you need to make a claim.

With a little planning ahead and some background knowledge about the process, you’ll enjoy the process of shopping for an engagement ring. It’s an exciting time in your life! Enjoy it to the fullest, and when you find the perfect ring, protect it with great quality cover. Get an instant online quote today.
