What To Do If You Lose Your Engagement Ring

Q Report Team
Updated on October 06, 2022
4 min read

We’ve heard some miraculous stories over the years about lost engagement rings. One woman turned her home inside out and upside down trying to find her missing diamond engagement ring. After a week of searching, she gave up.

Months later, she saw something sparkle while she was cleaning out her washing machine’s drain pump filter. Her heart leapt as she rinsed the item and realised it was her ring! It had been stuck in her washing machine for months! After a thorough cleaning, that sparkler was as good as new and happily back on the finger of its owner.

But unfortunately, sometimes lost engagement rings aren’t found. If you find yourself in the heartbreaking situation of having lost your favourite piece of jewellery, we hope these tips will help.

Retrace Your Steps

Try to remember the last time and place you remember seeing your ring. Did you wear it to the gym on Friday? Did you see it on your dresser yesterday morning? Then, retrace your steps by going to all the places you think it may have been since then. If you went to a public restroom, look there; you may have removed it when washing your hands. If you took a walk through your neighbourhood, retrace your steps while scanning the ground.

Check Lost & Found

For any public places you’ve visited, check with Lost & Found. Someone may have found your engagement ring and turned it in. You can also check with online Lost & Found pages, like the LostBox Australia Facebook page or other local community sites.

If you think you lost your ring in a particular place, you could post signs there, offering a reward for anyone who returns it to you.

Talk to the Police

If you have reason to believe your ring was stolen, contact your local police and file a report. With a report on file, police can compare your description to any rings suspected of having been stolen. For example, they may check with pawnbrokers or inventories of goods stolen during burglaries.

After you’ve given the police all the information they need, ask for a copy of the police report or at least the policy report number. If you have jewellery insurance, you’ll need it for your claim.

Contact Us

Notify us directly to report that you’ve lost your engagement ring. You can either call us on 1300 882 018 or email us at claims@qreport.com.au.

Once we’re in contact, we’ll guide you through the next steps of your claim: getting us copies of a statutory declaration and the police report. We will then take care of the rest and liaise with your jeweller and the underwriter and keep you updated along the way.

Assuming there are no problems and we don’t require any further information, we’re usually finished processing claims in 5 days, though we routinely wind them up in 48 hours.

Return to Your Original Jeweller for a Replacement

You chose your original jeweller for particular reasons. Perhaps you decided on Natalie Marie because you love her fresh Aussie style. Or maybe you chose Bentley De Lisle for their unique coloured gemstone engagement rings.

Whatever the reason, we think you should be able to return to your chosen jeweller for your replacement ring. And when your replacement ring is back on your finger, make sure it’s fully insured. Because you know too well that anything can happen.

Lost Engagement Ring FAQ

What if the diamond falls out, but you still have the rest of the ring?

If prongs lose their shape or if a setting loosens up, a diamond may fall out of the ring without you noticing. If this happens, you follow the same claim procedures as you would for the loss of the entire ring.

What if you’re not sure if the ring was lost or stolen?

If you don’t know whether a thief took your ring or it was simply misplaced, contact the police and give them all the facts you do have. Then contact us, and we’ll assist you through the claims process.

I’m about to purchase an engagement ring. How do I insure it?

You can purchase Q Report jewellery insurance a couple of different ways. If you buy the engagement ring from a Q Certified Jeweller, you can request insurance at the point of sale. The ring will be covered from the moment you walk it out of the shop, giving you immense peace of mind.

If you purchase the ring from another jeweller, contact us directly about securing a Q Report policy. You can call us or get an instant online quote right here on our website.

We hope you never experience the heartbreak of losing your engagement ring. But if you do, we’re here to offer you hope (and a replacement ring that’s every bit as gorgeous as the original).
