Does travel insurance cover my engagement ring?

Unfortunately, many insurers specifically rule out cover for pieces of high-value jewellery. “High-value” is a relative term, so you’ll have to review the terms of your policy carefully, but in most cases, engagement rings won’t be fully covered.

 

Another problem people run into with travel insurance is that jewellery may face depreciation during the claims process. Instead of getting a benefit that fully replaces your ring, you may have to settle for less than its full value or accept a lower-quality replacement.

Flashing large diamonds around on public transit can seem like an invitation to savvy pickpockets. Avoid wearing eye-catching jewellery in public. If your diamond attracts attention, consider turning it around (toward your palm) when walking through a crowded area that feels unsafe.

 

Also, don’t leave your engagement ring in your check-in baggage, whether you’re flying or riding a train. Keep it with you at all times.

 

Be Careful About Leaving It in a Hotel Safe

If you plan on leaving your engagement ring at the hotel sometimes, call ahead and find out about their safety accommodations. Does your hotel provide safes? If so, what kind?

 

Never leave valuables in your hotel room while you’re out. Too many people have access to room keys, and room safes aren’t as safe as you might assume.
