At first, sporting a diamond can feel like tending a newborn. It’s so precious, so fragile (is it?). You can’t keep your eyes off it, and your mind fills with questions: Should you wear it to workout? Can I clean it with soap? What about wearing it while sleeping?

These are all great questions, and you probably have more. Like your soon-to-be spouse, this piece of jewellery will be incorporated into the ins and outs of your days. You’ll wear it to parties, to the office, and the laundry room. Since your gorgeous new ring is likely the most expensive piece of jewellery you’ve owned, we’ve put together some tips to help you keep it as good as new.

1 - Treat It Kindly

Diamonds are famously tough, but they’re not invincible. They’re indeed considered the hardest naturally occurring substance in the world, and that’s one of the reasons they’re perfect for a piece of jewellery you’ll wear every day.

They can still crack, chip, and bruise, however, so you’ll need to protect it. Claw settings, in particular, leave the edges of a diamond vulnerable to chips and cracks. Marquise and pear shapes, with their sharp points, need a bit of extra babying. Treat your ring gently, and it will last many happy years.

2 - Clean It Often

Dirt and oil building will block the light interactions within the diamond, making it appear dull and old. To keep it looking good as new, clean it regularly.

Fortunately, cleaning an engagement ring is easy. Just drop it into a bowl of warm water mixed with a few drops of mild dishwashing detergent. Allow it to sit for a few minutes to loosen dust and oils. Then, gently work the rest of the dirt away with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Rinse it, dry it, and admire that good-as-new sparkle once more.

3 - Know When to Leave It Home

Your engagement ring is a constant reminder of your love and commitment to each other, but there are times when it’s best to leave your sparkler at home.

Avoid wearing it when you’re working in the garden, using power tools, rock climbing, and playing racquet sports. If you’re cleaning with corrosive chemicals, remove your ring or wear heavy-duty gloves.

A day at the beach isn’t the best place for your ring either. When you’re cold, your ring loosens up, and it could slip off your finger in the ocean.

4 - Buy Engagement Ring Insurance

We insure our homes, our teeth, and our cars. If you wouldn’t be able to cover the cost of replacing your engagement ring upon losing it, insurance is the answer.

Why not insure your engagement ring from the moment you walk it out of the jewellery store? You can! With Q Report, you never have to worry about theft, loss, and damage. Sadly, these things happen sometimes. But they don’t have to be life-changing experiences. Cover your ring, and wear it with peace of mind.

5 - Take Care with Ring Resizing

If your ring feels tighter or looser than when you first slipped it on your finger, resist the impulse to have it resized immediately.

Weight fluctuations, travelling, exercise and even seasonal changes in temperature can all affect your ring’s fit. Some jewellers prefer sizing buyers in the afternoon (specifically at 14:30) or after they’ve been exercising. Accommodating for swelling can help avoid discomfort later on.

If you notice that your ring is consistently too large or too small, size up or down as necessary. If it’s too loose, your diamond will experience more wear, and the setting might bend out of shape.

6 - Check Your Ring’s Health Regularly

To keep your ring good as new, keep an eye (and ear) on it. Check the claws regularly, looking for wear and tear. Are they in their proper positions? Do any of them look shorter than the others?

You can also check your ring’s health by holding it up to your ear and gently tapping on the diamond. If you hear anything like a crackling sound, then it’s a sign that the diamond may be loose. Take it to your jeweller to tighten everything up and make sure your diamond nests securely in its setting.

7 - Keep Ring Dishes Around the House

If you’re prone to losing things, scatter a few ring dishes around your home, so you don’t misplace it. Taking your ring off while you’re cleaning or digging in the garden soil is a great way to protect it, but you might lose it.

If you never set your ring down in odd places, you vastly reduce your chances of losing it. Put it in a ring dish, where it will always be safe and sound.

8 - Give It a Luxurious Home

How do you store your ring when you’re not wearing it? Maybe you’re going on a 5-day beach holiday and decide to leave your engagement ring at home.

Gold is soft and can be scratched if it’s entangled with other precious metals. Store your sparkler in a fabric-lined pouch all its own. Velvet boxes and microfibre envelopes are great options for ring storage if you want your ring to maintain its original shine.

9 - Watch Personal Care Products

Hairspray, body lotion, hair dye, and other chemical-laden personal care products can downgrade your ring’s sheen. Avoid possible damage from these chemicals by removing your ring when you use them.

10 - Hands Off the Diamonds

Keep that rock blingy by not touching the stones more than necessary. You’d be surprised how much impact the slightest film has on your diamond’s sparkle. It’s not uncommon to touch your diamond when you put on or take off your ring. Instead, train yourself to pinch the sides of your band, leaving your diamond sparkly and clean.
