Travel Insurance Traps: Covering Your Jewellery

Q Report Team
Updated on November 06, 2023

If you’re travelling overseas and taking your precious jewellery with you, you’ll want to be confident that it's protected if the unexpected happens. Many holidaymakers assume that travel insurance covers their valuable items, but often don’t realise that special conditions apply to jewellery.

So how well does travel insurance really protect your jewellery overseas?

In this article, we look into areas where travel insurance can fall short, some common mistakes to avoid and how specialised jewellery insurance can give you the confidence you’re looking for.

Travel Insurance for Jewellery

Most travel insurance providers offer automatic cover for valuable items like electronics. However, items with a value over a certain amount (like jewellery) must be specified when buying your policy. This cover for ‘high-value items’ usually comes at a higher premium.

If you don’t have specialised jewellery insurance and want to add jewellery cover under your travel insurance, pay attention to the coverage limits for personal belongings. For example, Southern Cross Travel Insurance provides cover up to $10,000 per specified item and $15,000 total cover per journey, which is about as high as you’ll find.

Unfortunately, this means that if your engagement ring is valued over $10,000, you won’t be covered for its full value. Worse yet, you won’t have the final say in where it’s repaired or replaced if it’s damaged or lost. We’ll explain this point in more detail later on.

Now let’s look at a few common instances where travel insurance often falls short in providing comprehensive cover for jewellery.

Where Travel Insurance Falls Short

Travel insurance is a must-have for protecting ourselves in the case of injury and illness overseas, but valuable belongings are often subject to some strict conditions of cover. For example, your jewellery may not be covered if:

  • It was stolen from your hotel room and you neglected to use the hotel safe provided
  • It was lost or stolen in a taxi and you weren’t holding it on your person
  • It was stolen from your beach towel while you were swimming

These are just a few examples of scenarios where it might be deemed that you left your jewellery “unattended”, thus voiding cover for your valuable items. There are several other ways that unlucky travellers have been caught out by complicated cover restrictions, which include being deemed under the influence of alcohol, or not covered because they weren’t using a licensed tour provider or rental agency.

Claiming for Jewellery With Travel Insurance

A clunky and confusing claims process is another common frustration that jewellery owners experience with some travel insurers. They’re required to provide police reports, undergo extensive interviews, and gather several quotes from jewellers for replacement or repair.

After this process, they often find that significant depreciation has been applied to their precious item and that the insurer has the final say on where they must go to have their jewellery replaced.

Benefits of Specialised Jewellery Insurance While Travelling

Whether you’re enjoying your jewellery at home or travelling with it overseas, specialised jewellery insurance like Q Report is the smartest way to protect the things you love. When you protect yourself with a Q Report policy, you enjoy benefits like:

  • 12 months worldwide cover
  • Agreed value policy, so the full sum insured will be paid out in the event of a total loss
  • Cover up to 125%, so you can receive like-for-like replacement even if it costs more than you originally bought it for
  • A low, fixed excess of $100 if you need to make a claim
  • The choice to return to your original jeweller for replacement or repair.
