Ring Size Guide & Sizer

Download Guide

A perfectly fitted ring is a joy to wear. It serves as a constant reminder of one of your favourite people, and it makes everyday life more beautiful. But what happens when your precious ring isn't a perfect fit?

‘Too-tight’ rings are uncomfortable, and it can be risky to wear a ring that you can’t easily remove. If your finger becomes injured, for instance, you may need to have the ring cut off before you can get medical treatment.

‘Too-loose’ rings are sources of worry and irritation. You may knock them on hard surfaces during the day, and the ring may even slip off your finger when you’re cold. Rings that are too large are vulnerable to damage and loss.

Fortunately, there is a simple solution to these problems: ring resizing! In this blog post, we’ll examine the “what,” the “when,” and the “where” of ring resizing, giving you the tools you need to get a perfect fit.

What is Ring Resizing?

Simply put, ring resizing is the process of making a ring larger or smaller so it fits perfectly. Rings may be the wrong size for a variety of reasons. Here are a few:

  • The ring used to fit, but your fingers are now larger or smaller
  • The ring wasn’t the right size when it was purchased
  • The ring was inherited from a family member and needs to be resized to fit another person

For these and other reasons, rings sometimes need to be resized. The good news is that in most cases, jewellers can resize rings so skillfully that you can’t tell there has been any alteration.

When Should You Consider It?

Most people experience fluctuations in the way their rings fit. For example, your hands may be larger or smaller depending on:

  • The weather
  • Health issues that cause fluid retention
  • The kinds of physical activities you’ve been engaging in.

All of these issues may cause short-term size issues for your rings, but don’t necessarily mean you need to consider resizing because of them.

On the other hand, if you’ve had a large change in your weight that won’t be changing anytime soon (as opposed to pregnancy weight), a resizing may be in order.

How to Find a Trusted Jeweller for Resizing

Ring resizing shouldn’t be handled by just anyone. If it’s not done skillfully, resizing could affect its structural integrity and its value. Done well, you’ll never be able to tell the ring was altered at all.

If you have a family jeweller you know and trust, take your ring in for a consultation. Our Q Certified Jewellers are a great place to start if you’re looking for a trusted jeweller for ring resizing.

If possible, take the ring back to the jeweller who created the ring. This person will know the piece well and is likely to have the tools and materials to complete the job well. If you can’t return to your original jeweller, referrals from family and friends can also be very helpful.

As you talk with the jeweller about the ring resizing, discuss the following considerations:

  • Are there any pave stones that will be affected by the resizing?
  • Are there any delicate stones (pearls, emeralds or opals, for example) that could get damaged in the process? If so, what precautions will the jeweller take to ensure their preservation?
  • Will engravings be upset by the resizing? If so, what can the jeweller do about them?
  • Will the thickness of the ring be an issue with resizing?
  • Does the ring need to go up or down more than four sizes? If so, will any alterations to the design need to be made?
  • How long will the resizing take?
  • Will the jeweller be able to perfectly match the colour of the ring (if metal needs to be added)?

A professional jeweller will be able to finish your resizing so that your treasured ring will fit you perfectly. Get an instant quote to find out how little it costs to protect your precious jewellery with specialised cover from Q Report Jewellery Insurance.
