Creating new trends is the name of the game for celebrities. From hairstyles and footwear to baby names and holiday spots, celebrities sway preferences and keep styles moving.
Engagement ring trends are inspired by celebrities too, as we’ll see from the following examples. Will you find the perfect engagement ring style on a celebrity’s hand? Read on.
Meghan Markle’s engagement ring brought back a classic style that is both romantic and timeless. Three-stone rings like the one belonging to the Duchess of Sussex symbolise the past, present and future of a couple’s life together, truly a lovely sentiment.
The centre stone in Markle’s ring was sourced in Botswana, a place that has special meaning to Prince Harry. The two side stones belonged to Harry’s mother, Princess Diana. Even if you can’t source your diamonds from royal family collections, the symbolism of this design will warm her heart, and as an added bonus, you’ll be on trend.
Pear-shaped diamonds have been in demand before. Back in 1966, Frank Sinatra proposed to Mia Farrow with a pear-shaped diamond flanked by tapered baguettes. The platinum ring epitomised Hollywood glamour. The couple met on a movie set in 1964 when Sinatra was 49 and Farrow was 19, a rising star. Old Blue Eyes also gave his bride a bracelet to match her ring, a double row of diamonds crafted by the ring’s creator, Billy Ruser.
Pear-shaped diamonds seemed to fade in popularity over the next several decades, but if celebrity trends are any indicator, they’re back and more popular than ever.
When Pete Davidson proposed to Ariana Grande in June of 2018, pear-shaped diamonds took centre stage. The three-carat sparkler created by New York jeweller Greg Yuna, featuring a stunning pear shaped diamond surrounded by a halo of smaller diamonds and a simple pavé-encrusted band. Unfortunately, the engagement was called off just four months later, but the ring’s design has inspired an important modern trend. And it’s not the only one.
Less than a year before Davidson proposed to Ariana Grande, rapper Offset proposed to Cardi B with a similar ring, an 8-carat pear-shaped stone surrounded by smaller pink diamonds. And in January 2018, Paris Hilton received a 20-carat tear-drop stunner from fiance Chris Zylka. Sophie Turner’s tear-drop engagement ring from Joe Jonas features a unique double, stone-encrusted band, a lovely addition to the gorgeous stone.
The pear isn’t the only unusual diamond shape trending today. In the summer of 2018, Justin Bieber proposed to Hailey Baldwin with a 6- to 10-carat oval diamond set on a simple yellow gold band. Instagram lit up with images of Baldwin wearing the engagement ring created by Solow & Co, and a trend was set.
In January 2019, Chris Pratt proposed to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s daughter Katherine with a 5-carat oval-shaped diamond engagement ring. Keeping the focus on the diamond, the jeweller set the stone on a simple, narrow band. Ovals continue to be in demand; it’s a trend to pay attention to.
Those who struggle to decide between yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, platinum and silver will love this trend. Mixed metals are showing up in surprising ways, celebrities such as Isla Fisher and Keira Knightley wear stackable wedding rings in different metals. Kate Middleton also has both gold and silver bands in her rings.
Take Disney’s new engagement ring line, for example. The “Belle” ring has rose gold accents on a white gold band, and the “Rapunzel” ring has a vine of yellow gold interwoven through white gold, creating a luxe, intriguing design. Look for more and more mixed metals in 2019.
What’s old is new again, and just as Princess Diana and Grace Kelly wore engagement rings with gorgeous gemstones, today’s celebrity brides are once again flashing sapphires, emeralds and rubies.
Brad Falchuk proposed to Gwyneth Paltrow in 2018 with a deep blue sapphire solitaire, and Princess Eugenie of York’s engagement ring features a coral-coloured padparadscha sapphire surrounded by smaller diamonds.
In addition to sapphires of all hues, Victoria’s Secret model Irina Shayk’s engagement ring has a brilliant green emerald stone. Many of these rings feature a coloured stone surrounded by smaller diamonds. However, Olivia Wilde’s engagement ring turns things inside out with a dazzling centre diamond surrounded by aqua green emeralds. Gorgeous.
