Rules of Engagement: What do I buy?

So you’re madly in love and ready to pop the question to your partner, all you need is the ring. But with so may things to think about when picking the perfect piece, where do you start?

First of all, you don’t need to follow tradition. There’s this old rule that says you have to spend between 1-3 months salary on an engagement ring. But as we know, rules are made to be broken. How much you spend on a ring is completely up to you (and your partner if they’re involved in this process) because when it comes to money, there shouldn’t be a ‘one size fits all’ approach.

Also, the ring doesn’t have to be diamonds with a gold or silver band, you can have any metal you choose. Stainless steel, for example, is gaining popularity as it’s relatively inexpensive and doesn’t tarnish. Mixed metals are also a good way to find the perfect shade you’re after - couples have even had rings made from turquoise and onyx.

Another option is to head to the auctions, you never know what hidden gems you’ll find at a good price.

The next thing to consider is your partner’s lifestyle. For an active person who will be wearing their ring everyday, a large diamond solitaire will probably just get in the way so a flat band of diamonds might be a better alternative. A grouping of smaller diamonds is also usually cheaper than one big rock.

Now if you do want a rock, you need to think about diamond size and at this point it’s a good idea to get informed about the 4 C’s: cut, colour, clarity and carat.

The last (and most important) thing to considering when buying an engagement ring is to give yourself time. You may not find ‘the one’ in just a single visit to a jewellers. You want to make this decision a good one, so don’t rush it.
